JBLM Stryker Soldier Dies From IED in Afghanistan

Cpl. Juan P. Navarro, 23, Austin, Texas, died July 7, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when he was attacked with an enemy improvised explosive device.

According to the Dept. of Defense, Cpl. Juan P. Navarro, 23, Austin, Texas, died July 7, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when he was attacked with an enemy improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

According to unit records, Cpl. Navarro entered the Army in June 2008. He attended Initial Army Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Benning, GA. His AIT training was for MOS 11B (Infantryman).

Cpl. Navarro arrived at Joint Base Lewis-McChord November 2008 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He deployed to Iraq with his battalion from August 2009 to June 2010, and deployed with his battalion to Afghanistan in March. This was his second deployment.

Cpl. Navarro’s military education includes Military Occupational Specialty 11B: Infantryman (2008), and the Warrior Leader Course (2011).

His awards and decorations include Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Driver and Mechanic Badge.
