Employee volunteers at Lakewood-based Puget Sound Orthopaedics (PSO) are accepting blanket donations for graduates of the foster care system.
Helping Hands Northwest, which has applied for non-profit status and was previously called the Friendship Fund, is an employee group that funds and volunteers for many charitable projects in Lakewood and Tacoma.
The group seeks 17 twin- or larger-sized blankets, preferably home made, to include in foster care graduate survival kits that will be distributed at The Foster Care Resource Network’s foster youth graduation on May 16.
The blankets can be knitted, crocheted, sewn or quilted in unisex colors and patterns and should be completed by May 11.
In total, 22 foster youths will participate in the graduation ceremony. Most foster children who age out of the system have few resources available to them.
- 10 percent will be able to stay with their current foster families
- A few will try and reunite with their birth families
- Independent Youth Housing Program (IYHP) will choose a select few to receive financial assistance for housing
- Others will be homeless with nowhere to go
“Last year we put together 31 bags and the kids said that the bag of goodies were amazing,” said Sarah Harris, project leader. The bags will include personal care items, gift cards and other items. “We even heard a story of how one graduate used her gift card to purchase clothing for a job interview—and she landed the job!”
To donate a blanket, or money for other items, please contact Harris by April 27 (for blankets) at Sa.email@example.com or 253.722.0387.
