Access Limited To American Lake Park Through Oct. 10

It's part of the state Department of Ecology's ongoing Soil Safety Program. During the work, the main parking lot will be closed. Kiwanis Park will have similar work but will remain open.

American Lake Park, located off Veterans Drive in Lakewood, will have very limited public access from Sept. 17 through Oct. 10 as a Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) contractor completes environmental upgrades.

This project is part of the DOE’s ongoing Soil Safety Program. During construction, City staff will keep the main parking lot closed. Access to the park will be limited to the boat launch side. Staff will cover the “trailer parking only” signs and allow all vehicles to park in the boat launch side during construction.

The contractor will remove all the sod and soil to a depth of 12 inches the full width of the park from the picnic shelter to the bulkhead and down to the beach on the east end.  Heavy (and occasionally loud) equipment will operate in the park. The contractor plans on working weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The work also involves replacing the soil and sod at the site.  The sodded area will remain closed through winter to allow the sod to establish a good root system.

Kiwanis Park will also have similar work done as part of this program, but will remain open to the public as it is a smaller area.  The work zone at Kiwanis will be fenced off October 8-15 and possibly sooner depending on the contractor’s schedule.
