JBLM Soldier To Receive Same Helmet That Saved His Life In Afghanistan

A bullet hit Sgt. Roger Daniels with 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade in the head, but his Army issued Advanced Combat helmet saved his life.

A soldier with the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will receive the same helmet that saved his life last year in Afghanistan

Sgt. Roger Daniels was serving in Afghanistan with Company B, 109th Military Intelligence, 201st BfSB, when insurgents ambushed his unit Aug. 21, 2012. The enemy attacked the soldiers with sustained automatic fire. During the ambush, a bullet penetrated Daniels’ Advanced Combat helmet. Daniels was wounded but survived the attack.

After the incident, the helmet was returned to Program Executive Office Soldier - the helmet's Virginia manufacturer - where it underwent forensics analysis to understand how well it worked. PEO Soldier uses forensic analysis to continuously improve Soldier equipment.
