THIS WEEKEND: Join The Lakewood Sounder Ribbon-Cutting Saturday

The celebration in Lakewood at 10:30 a.m. Free round trip train rides from Lakewood to Tacoma will take place at noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Don't know if you've heard, but the Sounder Train is-a-coming to Lakewood on Oct. 8.

To celebrate, Sound Transit will hold a ribbon-cutting celebration with plenty of activities Saturday at its Lakewood, South Tacoma and Tacoma Dome stations that will be open to the public.

The celebration in Lakewood is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free round-trip train rides from Lakewood to Tacoma will take place at noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Here are the activities scheduled for the Lakewood Station celebration:

  • Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (11 a.m.) includes Posting of Colors by the JBLM 4th Stryker Brigade
  • Inaugural train ride (12 p.m.)
  • Live music by the 56th Army Brass Quintet and the Clover Park High School Steel Drum Band
  • Commemorative giveaways, including signed prints by noted artist J Craig Thorpe
  • Take pictures at the Sounder photo booth
  • Talk to representative from Sound Transit, InterCity Transit, JBLM Commutes, City of Lakewood.

Here are the activities scheduled for South Tacoma Station:

  • Face painting, balloon animals and coloring for the kids
  • "Be smart, Be safe" game booth and Operation Lifesaver trailer
  • Commemorative giveaways, including model paper trains
  • Meet Zap Gridlock, the traffic-fighting superhero
  • Take pictures at the Sounder photo booth
  • Talk to representatives from Sound Transit, STAR Center, South Tacoma Business District, South Tacoma Neighborhood Council

Here are the activities scheduled for Tacoma Dome Station

  • Live music by the Duwamish Dixieland Band
  • Commemorative giveaways
  • Talk to representatives from Sound Transit, Freighthouse Square Merchants Association, the Dome District, the Downtown Merchants Group (DMG), Tacoma's Downtown on the Go, and more.
