Pierce Transit Cuts Service by 28 Percent; How Will It Affect Your Commute?

Starting Sept. 29, Pierce Transit will operate approximately 300,000 annual hours, which is a 28 percent reduction from the current service hours.

Lakewood residents will see reduced bus and shuttle services by Pierce Transit starting September.

The Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to cut 28 percent of Pierce Transit's service at their monthly meeting on Monday, The News Tribune reported.

According to the Pierce Transit website, the agency currently operates at 417,000 annual service hours.

Starting Sept. 29, 2013, it will operate approximately 300,000 annual hours, which is a 28 percent cut.

Pierce Transit said the proposed Service Reduction Plan is based on an extensive system redesign project, robust public outreach since 2009, public communication associated with Proposition 1 and Board direction.

In the November general elections in 2012, more than 100,000 Pierce County voters rejected Pierce Transit's Proposition 1, which would have increased local sales taxes by 0.3 percent in Pierce County.
