Rich Block, Poor Block: How Does Your Lakewood Neighborhood Compare?

Do different parts of Lakewood have different income levels? And how do the closest neighbors of Lakewood residents compare? Read on to find the answer.

When you drive through Lakewood, some neighborhoods seem more affluent than others. But just how wide is the disparity between different parts of town?

A new data-based website, Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks provides some answers to that question. The site uses U.S. census information compiled from the 2007-2011 American Community Survey to show median household income and monthly rents by census tract.

The data show that the median household income ranges from $29,449 to $78,306.

Steilacoom and Dupont neighborhoods tend to be more affluent, while areas along Interstate 5 and Tillicum fall in the lower end of the spectrum.

According to the website, Joint Base Lewis-McChord residents’ annual household income averaged $41,189.

Nearly half of the communities in Lakewood fall below the statewide middle-class range, which is between $52,508 to $64,322.

In contrast, the average monthly rent range from $586 to $833 in most parts of Lakewood, including Steilacoom and along the highway. Meanwhile, waterfront neighborhoods near Dupont showed higher median monthly rent of $1,421.
