Work On New Southbound I-5 Lane Will Create Detours Near JBLM Starting Next Week

The shoulder between Thorne Lane and Berkeley Avenue will be closed from Sept. 4 to Dec. 1 to allow the state to work.

The shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 from Exit 123 (Thorne Lane) to Exit 122 (Berkeley Ave.) will be closed Sept. 4 to Dec. 1. for road construction.

WSDOT is creating another traffic lane where the shoulder is currently to help alleviate traffic congestion in that area.

During the closure, southbound traffic using Exit 122 will be restricted to the ramp only. Overflow traffic will not have access to the right-hand shoulder, nor will traffic be allowed to block the right-hand lane of I-5. If the Exit 122 SB off-ramp is at capacity, continue southbound to Exit 120.

Due to heavy weekday morning traffic volume, drivers who normally use the Madigan Gate to report for PT and work in the morning are encouraged to use alternate routes.

From the north:

  • SR 512 to Steele St. to Spanaway Loop to Military Rd. to Lincoln/Rainier Gate (opens 5:30 a.m.)
  • Southbound I-5 to Thorne Lane to access the Logistics Center Gate (opens at 5 a.m. MON-FRI).
Drivers should leave early to accommodate the increased travel times.
