Bird Watching at Fort Steilacoom Park
Join John Riegsecker and Diane Yorgason-Quinn of Tahoma Audubon for a field trip to a local hot spot featured in the brand new Puget Loop of the Great Washington Birding Trail - Fort Steilacoom Park! Enjoy this freshwater oasis in the heart of the urban area at the very beginning of the neotropic bird migration. We expect to see just-hatched ducklings of several species and if we're really lucky, baby coots. We will be looking for early flycatchers and perhaps an early Black-Throated Gray Warbler, as well as Savannah Sparrows and House Wrens, as this is one of the few places in western Washington they nest. Meet at the I5/W512 P&R near McDonalds at 8 AM, or if you know how to get there, meet at the Fort Steilacoom Park red barns parking area at 8:30 AM. Expect an easy walk around the Waughop Lake first, until about 11:30 AM. If anyone wants to stay longer, we'll go uphill to the old orchards.
