Local Happenings at a Glance

Wondering where to go, what to do or what to see this weekend in Lakewood and the surrounding areas? Fear not, because Lakewood Patch has you and all your entertainment needs covered.

1)

The Lakewood Playhouse and the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in Tacoma have teamed up to offer a collaborative play, an adaptation of Chaim Potok’s “My Name Is Asher Lev,” produced in part by each organization and which is now finishing out its run at the Lakewood Playhouse. The play tells coming-of-age story of a young, promising artist who inevitably becomes torn between his passion for art and his Orthodox Jewish faith and family, all along examining loyalty and religion and their connections to one’s growth.

2) New Jack City live

Local R&B and hip-hop hybrid outfit New Jack City, who were nominated for a Best Local Band Award by King 5’s Best of Western Washington in 2010 will be bringing their soulful grooving sounds to Broadway Joe’s Saturday night, March 12. 3) The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Have the urge to 'do the time again warp again' recently taken over your thoughts and actions? Your opportunity arrives this weekend as Tacoma’s oldest and only Rocky Horror Picture Show – put on by the Blue Mousketeers of the Blue Mouse Theater – show the science fiction and B horror film parody adapted from the original British rock stage play every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Grab your gaggle of Janet, Brad and Frank loving friends and enjoy this cult classic in a truly one-of-a-kind and local setting. Saturday, March 12. 4) Second Sundays

On the second Sunday of every month from 1-2:30 p.m. throughout the year, a concert series is presented in the Conservatory at Wright Park to enhance visitors' experience of the natural setting. The performers reflect a wide spectrum of musical tastes and the performance is intended to appeal to audiences of all ages and sensibilities. Most of the year, the music is played inside the conservatory and the music can be heard while visitors view the various gorgeous botanical exhibits. Marina Shats, composer and pianist, is the first musician to kick off this annual community tradition. Sunday, March 13 at Wright Park, located at 316 S. 'G' St. Info: www.metroparkstacoma.com.

5) RAGS Wearable Art Sale & Gallery

RAGS is a juried wearable art competition and sale that benefits the YWCA’s domestic violence prevention and intervention programs, and that has become an annual philanthropic event that is looked forward to by the community. Created and planned entirely by volunteers, sponsors and underwriting donations, RAGS offers guests an opportunity to view and purchase new and unique clothing, jewelry and accessories created by artists from across the United States. A portion of all sales helps the YWCA keep abused women and children safe, healthy and self-sufficient.
