First-Ever Lakewood Music Video to be Released Next Month

The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce is spearheading the project that will be featured on its website, in TV commercial spots in 2012 and social media outlets such as Facebook and YouTube.

Can we expect fancy footwork and a beat you can dance to from the ?

The 500-member association plans to showcase what the city of roughly 60,000 is about through a choreographed music video featuring well-known landmarks, community members and an original song.

Linda Smith, Lakewood Chamber president, is spearheading the project and predicts that people will like it. And not just because it's her brainchild.

"Who are we?" Smith asked. "You're going to feel the heart (of Lakewood), which is an integral part of what Lakewood is all about."

Lakewood is one of the most . It has one of the poorest neighborhoods, with Tillicum/Woodbrook, along with some of the . There's a thriving along with corporate biggies like and .

And let's not forget about nearby , the third largest employer in Washington state and largest military installation along the West Coast.

The Chamber is putting its own spin on what Lakewood means.

"The idea is two-fold," Smith said. "We want to encourage people to visit Lakewood, and instill pride in the residents and business owners."

The video's first shoot will take place early next week. The Chamber plans to release the music video by mid-November. A condensed version will run as a commercial spot on TV in 2012.

Smith said it was time to make a digital splash with the rise of YouTube and social media outlets like Facebook.

"We're tightening up venues that we are utilizing," Smith said. "It's not hokey."

A male artist wrote and sang the Lakewood song. The title will be released when the video launches.

More cities and local underground music artists are finding creative ways to market their communities and brand their names. The city of Gig Harbor created a mini documentary about the history of the fishing village. A local hip-hop artist created a music video about the 253 area code.

University Place's is producing the music video. Smith said they are using $10,000 of the $65,000 they received from the city of Lakewood's Lodging Tax Fund this year.

Smith isn't revealing where the video will be shot, but she mentioned that there are plenty of interesting venues in Lakewood such as , and the .
