The World in a Nutshell-Lakewood Farmers Market

Remember those capsules that we bought as kids...or for our kids, the ones that you put in water and some sort of creature or flower or animal emerged..larger than life?  That's what came to mind as I perused the Lakewood Farmers Market for the first time, this past Tuesday afternoon.

On my initial approach I thought, what a cute "little" market.  This could be interpreted in a couple of ways, either that the market is small and uninteresting or that it is small, cozy, interactive, grassroots and personal.  Being the positive person that I am, I hoped for the latter, and to my surprise, it was that and a whole lot more.

I was amazed at the variety of products available in one small market. One could leave there feeling like they had experienced the world...in an hour.  First stop Italy, with pasta of every size, shape and flavor...sweet potato orzo, who would have thought?  There was a substantial offering of fresh Washington grown produce, organic, pesticide free, lettuce, asparagus, cherries, apricots, rhubarb-which incidentally has its origins in China, as a healing plant.  Talking about China, there was some healthy Bak Choy (some of which made its way home to my dinner table) and fat, juicy Chinese Snow Peas.  Artisan breads crafted after the old world European style, just waiting to be slathered with the fresh strawberry jam available from one of the vendors.  I have to mention the colorful dozen of free range, organic eggs that I have enjoyed..note to self: a dozen eggs next Tuesday.

Beautiful flowers, grass fed, locally grown meat, fantastic craftsmen and artists selling their wares brought a nice, rounded off feeling to the market.  The city representatives were also there to assist someone such as myself in getting to know our great community and all that it has to offer, as well as it's goals for our future..which is bright!

My day was complete as I headed to my car with a container of hot, fresh
Filipino lumpia...covered in sweet chili sauce...delish!  Next week I think I'll try the crepe stand...now off to my work out!

I love Lakewood!
