Drunken Driving Awareness Month at Pierce College: See how a drunk sees the road

Ever wonder how coordinated you are after a couple of drinks?

Find out this Thursday and next Tuesday at “Walk the Line: Drunken Driving Awareness.”

Participants can try on a pair of “drunk goggles,” which simulate the impaired vision of an intoxicated person. While wearing the goggles, they can try to walk through an obstacle course.

In observance of Drunk Driving Awareness Month, the event will be Thursday, April 25, at the Fort Steilacoom campus, then repeated Tuesday, April 30, at the Puyallup campus.

At each session, a Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy will administer sobriety tests and give a brief presentation on the hazards of drinking alcohol and driving. Other organizations will be on hand to distribute information and talk with students.

The program is sponsored by the Pierce College Office of Student Life and made possible by a $2,500 grant from State Farm Insurance Co. 

Both sessions are free and open to the public.

“This event is important because students need to be educated about the effects of driving drunk on their lives and the lives of people around them, especially because drunk driving accidents are easily preventable,” said Katie Daniels, health and wellness coordinator in the Office of Student Life.
