ALL ABOARD! Sound Transit Provides Sounder Preview Ride Between Lakewood and Tacoma

Patch was part of the first ride of the Sounder service, which will open to the public Oct. 8.

I'm officially reporting from inside the Sounder train between Lakewood and Tacoma.

Patch is part of a group that got a preview ride today between the two stations. (The ride is so smooth, btw) It will open officially to the public Oct. 8.

We heard from a number of officials and dignitaries today, including Congressman Norm Dicks, Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy and Lakewood Mayor Doug Richardson.

Check back later for a full report and video.

I was really hoping that the Sounder from Lakewood would run other time other than the morning and late afternoon commute. How fun it would be to be able to hop on the Sounder in Lakewood and go into Seattle for lunch and then return a couple hours later. But I guess it really is a commuter train only. At least I live close enough to the tracks to hear the whistle as it crosses Steilacoom Blvd.

That would be awesome, Linda! Who knows, maybe if they build it out, we'll have a metro system a la the BART in San Francisco. Just thinking ...

I think they will make adjustments to the schedule based on actual rider demand to/from Lakewood. Would think they will be taking a survey from riders at the stations.

Linda, It sounds like your looking for the link system. It runs every 10 minutes and operates much more like a NY or London subway, not a train. Right now, besides the very basic downtown Tacoma service, the link to Seattle starts at SeaTac. We use it often for going to games, to avoid the downtown parking and congestion. Parking at the Tukwila lot is free (if you can find a space). It's expected to be expanded to Fed Way in 2016 but I don't think there are current plans to go any further south, which is too bad. It is kind of fun to ride, especially with a bunch of drunken seahawk fans...
