Another JBLM Stryker Brigade Soldier Dies in Afghanistan; Fifth in 10 Days

Spc.Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, of Salinas, CA, died May. 26 in Zharay, Kandahar province, Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, of Salinas, CA, died May. 26 in Zharay, Kandahar  province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.  He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.

He is the fifth soldier from the local installation outside of Lakewood to die in Afghanistan since May 18.
