Black Bear Caught, Wildlife Agents to Relocate Animal

Animal immobilized after being darted three times with a tranquilizer near Tyee Park in Lakewood.

A black bear roaming a Lakewood neighborhood near for the past several days was tranquilized three times Friday morning and placed in a carrier truck for relocation, according to Margaret Ainscough, Department of Fish and Wildlife official.

Kim Prentice, Clover Park School District spokesperson, said the school returned back to operating status around 9:30 a.m. It had been placed on lockdown for safety precautions.

Ainscough said the bear was spotted in the area this morning between 1:30-2 a.m. by a motorist. She did not know where the bear came from.

"That's not one of the areas we usually hear reports," she said. "Bear are fairly adaptable."

A DFW official darted the bear and it wandered off. It was finally immobilized after being shot two more times. Ainscough said it would be taken to Northwest Trek Wildlife Park to be evaluated to make sure it's in good condition before being released to the wild.

There were no injuries or property damage, according to DFW.
