Hooking Them at an Early Age

Local event draws families from Lakewood community for a chance to catch a fish.

A short bout of rain wasn't keeping these kids from casting off.

The City of Lakewood Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife along with volunteers helped make the kids fishing derby at American Lake Park on Saturday a success. Families were dressed for the mild temperatures and drizzly rain but remained in the spirit of fishing.

Volunteers assisted with the bait and hook as kids walked down to the beach with the intent of snagging a fish. With a countdown by Dennis Higashiyama, Lakewood Parks and Recreation staff member, kids held their rods tightly and casted into the lake. Kids were allowed to catch up to two fish.

Once netted, the Puget Sound Anglers cleaned and put ice on the fish to take home. It's the second year in a row the city has hosted the event but it's the fifth year the fishing derby has carried on. Amanda Richardson, recreation supervisor, said the event introduces or reminds families of an activity they can do outside.

"The kids had a great time," she said.

She added rain was a bit of a downer but kids families still enjoyed the event.

"It impacted the number of people who showed up but a good amount that registered still came," Richardson said.

Higashiyama echoed her thoughts, but said the expression on the kids' faces was enough to make the event worthwhile.

"It's nice to see a new generation getting hooked," he said.
