Glue and Binders and Markers, Oh My: CPSD School-Supply Lists Available

Lists available in local retailers, as well as online, and each "individual learning community" has a specific list per grade.

From crayons to calculators, it’s time to start thinking about school supplies.

The 2012-13 school year starts on Sept. 5 in the Clover Park School District, and supply lists for the district’s elementary and middle schools are available in local stores such as Target and Wal-Mart, as well as on the district's website.

And with deals popping up weekly at retailers, now is the time to jump on bargain prices for spiral notebooks, binders, backpacks and more.

Each school – and grade – has its own list. Notebook paper and writing utensils are universally required across the district, but each school is viewed as an individual learning community with different needs, said Jim Paxinos, assistant superintendent of elementary schools.

For example, kindergarteners at Idewild Elementary School are asked to provide two 24-count boxes of Crayola crayons and two bottles of hand sanitizer, while those at Dower Elementary are required to bring four bottles of Elmers White Glue and a box of tissue.

“Giving school staff the flexibility to set their own supply lists ensures that each classroom will be well-stocked with the necessary supplies to complete classwork, based on teacher preferences and special projects,” Paxinos said.

Some of the lists are lengthy – and require costlier items such as flash drives and calculators. Additionally, specific brands for supplies, such as Crayola and Fiskar, are mandated. In turn, district officials realize that can be a financial hardship for families.

“We encourage our families to purchase what they can afford,” Paxinos said. “Parents are encouraged to speak with their child’s teacher or principal if obtaining the requested supplies becomes a burden.”

He added that thanks to partnerships and community donations, all CPSD students will have the supplies needed to complete their work.

Caring For Kids will hold its annual on Aug. 11 at Lochburn Middle School, where needy students can receive free school supplies and clothing.

Additionally, Hudtloff Middle School’s list includes a $24 elective fee – but it is not alone in the requirement. All four of CPSD’s middle schools impose such a fee to pay for art supplies, sheet music, band and choir uniforms and family and consumer science materials.
