City, West Pierce Ask Residents For Moment Of Silence For Prescott Firefighters

The gesture Tuesday is intended to honor the 19 "Granite Mountain Hot Shot" firefighters killed in the line of duty near Yarnell, AZ.

As a sign of respect, deep condolence, and solidarity, the City of Lakewood and West Pierce Fire & Rescue encourage citizens to take a moment of silence on Tuesday, July 9 to honor the memory of the 19 “Granite Mountain Hot Shot” firefighters killed in the line of duty last week near YarnellAZ.

They were all members of the Prescott Fire Department.

Officials in Prescott will host a memorial service for the fallen firefighters on Tuesday. Last week, President Obama praised them as “heroes – highly-skilled professionals who, like so many across our country do every day, selflessly put themselves in harm's way to protect the lives and property of fellow citizens they would never meet.”

The City and West Pierce will also lower their flags to half-staff on Tuesday to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice of the Granite Mountain Hot Shot firefighters.

Lakewood Mayor Don Anderson, a former volunteer firefighter, commented, “The loss of these professionals doing their duty was tragic and overwhelming. The City of Lakewood shares a special understanding of the loss suffered by their families and community."

"It’s important for all of us to acknowledge their sacrifice and honor their memory.”  

Deputy Chief Mitch Sagers remarked, “The tragic loss of the 19 firefighters inArizona has deeply saddened the collective fire service. West Pierce Fire & Rescue mourns for their community, their fire department, and the families of these brave, young heroes who selflessly answered their last alarm.”  

The City of Lakewood and West Pierce Fire & Rescue will also send a joint letter of condolence to the mayor and fire chief in Prescott.
