Educating the Community About Vegetation Growth

With the arrival of spring, property owners should be aware that weeds and vegetation can quickly get out of control if not tended to in a timely manner. If that happens, they may be contacted by a member of the Community Safety Resource Team to bring the property into compliance with city codes.

Variances may be granted on a case by case basis, but The City of Lakewood vegetation code states it is unlawful for weeds or vegetation to become uncontrolled. Uncontrolled vegetation is defined as

• Any undesired, uncultivated and unsightly plants growing in profusion so as to crowd out desired plant growth or disfigure a lawn.
• Any vegetation growth, including but not limited to, weed, grasses, bushes, hedges and trees or tree branches which obstructs the vision of people in vehicles or on sidewalks or right-of–ways so as to interfere with safe, full and free use of any street, sidewalk or right-of-way within the city.
•  Any vegetation that creates a fire or other safety hazard.
• Any accumulation of weeds, brambles, berry vines, or other vegetation which is overgrowing any structure or which exceeds an average height of fifteen inches.

Overgrown blackberry bushes are a particular problem as they grow very fast and can quickly grow onto an adjoining property or into the right-of-way. In addition to uncontrolled vegetation being an eyesore, it can decrease property values
and can be a safety issue when interfering with the vision of traffic and or pedestrians.

Properties with uncontrolled vegetation look neglected and can attract crime such as vandalism and theft.
