High-Speed Chase Ends In Steilacoom With Two Burglary Suspects Arrested, Third Still Missing

Three-car accident happens in historic downtown area.

A high-speed chase of three burglary suspects ended in a crash and two arrests in downtown Steilacoom Friday at noon. A third suspect remains at large, police said.

Thurston County Police and a Washington State Patrol officer saw a reported burglary suspect vehicle just south of Lakewood on Interstate 5 around noon on Friday.

Steilacoom Police Officer Wil Nelson said there were three suspects in the lime green Mercury Marquis when one of the suspects jumped out near the City of Dupont exit.

"The other two came in (to Steilacoom) 80 or 90 mph," Nelson said.

The driver clipped a black Nissan Xterra SUV and smashed into a white Lexas SUV just outside the Steilacoom Town Hall building downtown before barreling into Steilacoom resident Nancy Radford's front yard down the street.

Radford heard a loud noise while inside her cottage home and was shocked to find a car had crashed in her front lawn, uprooting the light pole at the corner of Balch and Lafayette Street and spinning the fire hydrant.

"I didn't know what happened," Radford said as she stood outside her home looking at the damage. "They were speeding down here."

Nelson said two of the suspects were arrested. The other, Nelson said, ran onto Fort Lewis into a forested area. Nelson said it appeared the suspects suffered minor injuries.
