Joint Base Lewis-McChord Airman Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Gig Harbor

Ty C. Barnes, 23, flipped his motorcycle Monday night on Reid Drive Northwest. Barnes was an active-duty airman at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

A Joint Base Lewis-McChord airman died after he flipped his motorcycle Monday night on Reid Drive Northwest.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash in the 5000 block of Reid Drive NW in Gig Harbor around 11:20 p.m.

Ty C. Barnes, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Gig Harbor medical personnel.

Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesperson Det. Ed Troyer said Barnes was on his way home when he left the roadway on a sweeping right-hand curve and hit a large rock.

Barnes was an active-duty airman at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

A department chaplain notified Barnes’ mother, who lives in the area. The sheriff’s office notified the military through the JBLM military police. 

Barnes was wearing a helmet but did not have a motorcycle endorsement, according to Troyer.
