Lakewood Police Release More Details About Officer-Involved Shooting in Tillicum

The man has been identified as Patrick O'Meara, who authorities say refused to drop a weapon that turned out to be a "very realistic-looking" metal cap gun June 18.

Despite repeated orders from Lakewood Police to drop his weapon, authorities say Patrick O'Meara refused to do so the night officers fatally shot him in Tillicum last week.

On Monday, police released more details about the June 18 shooting, including that the weapon O'Meara was holding turned out to be a "very realistic-looking" metal cap gun.

Authorities had been looking for O'Meara, 28, for about a week at the time of the shooting. He was wanted on warrants related to a felony theft charge.

Police got a tip that he was inside a home 14900 block of Washington Avenue Southwest, shortly before midnight June 18. Officers knocked on the door and announced they were police, while others stood at the side of the house and spotted O'Meara through a window with what appeared to be a firearm.

"Despite repeated attempts to order O’Meara to drop the weapon, he refused and forced officers to fire their weapons," according to a Lakewood Police statement.

Lakewood Officers then entered the home and found O’Meara suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers performed CPR until medics arrived, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two Lakewood Officers fired their weapons. One of those officers is a 30-year-old man who has been with the department since September and has more than 8 ½ years of law enforcement experience. The other officer who fired is a 36-year-old man who has been with Lakewood since 2004 and has about 13 years of law enforcement experience.  Both officers are on paid administrative leave per department policy.
