Lakewood: Thanks 'COPS,' But No Thank You

The city says it's not interested in "turning back the clock" on that part of its history.

The bad boys aren't coming for anyone in Lakewood, at least not on television.

The television show "COPS" will not be filming more episodes in Lakewood, the city announced on its Facebook page Sunday night.

"We've had no fewer than (five) Facebook inquiries today about the status of the TV show "COPS" featuring Lakewood," it wrote. "The producer pitched another run of that series in Lakewood last month to the City Council."

"The council, however, was not interested in turning back the clock to that particular chapter of the city's history," it added.

The television program - a reality show that features on-duty police officers throughout the country - featured Lakewood and Pierce County Sheriff's Department deputies when the community didn't have a department for more than a decade.

While putting a spotlight on the officers who patrolled Lakewood, the show's presence prompted concern from locals about the community being depicted in a negative light.

"The show would no doubt highlight the professionalism of the LPD," the city wrote, "but Lakewood is now focused on economic development and enhancing the quality of life for our residents and visitors."

We want to hear from you, Patch users. What do you think? Is not allowing "COPS"  to film in Lakewood a good thing? Could it have helped bring attention to the community?
