Letter to the Editor: Fire Commissioner Urges Voters to Approve Fire Levy on Primary Election Ballot

The upcoming levy will continue existing revenue that is 25 percent of the district's budget.

This levy is not a new tax, and it will not increase current taxes.  Rather, this will continue existing revenue that is 25 percent of the fire district’s budget.

As a West Pierce Fire Commissioner, it is important to me that your taxpayer dollars are spent wisely. Accordingly, we have become a more efficient agency.

The Lakewood and University Place Fire Departments recently merged, allowing us to cut $900,000 per year by eliminating redundant positions. In recognition of the poor economy, firefighters, staff and commissioners have saved us an additional $500,000 through employee concessions.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue responds to approximately 14,000 calls per year. Our firefighters will continue to be there when lives and property are threatened. Please make sure that they have the resources to do the job. Please support the levy.
