Train Hits, Kills Man on Tracks in Steilacoom

West Pierce Fire & Rescue reports the incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m., Monday.

A 42-year-old man died after he was hit by a train Monday night in Steilacoom, according to authorities.

West Pierce Fire & Rescue says a northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train had just gone around a corner shortly before 8 p.m., when the engineer saw the man laying on the tracks.

The train, which was travelling between 40 miles per hour and 50 miles pher hour, couldn't stop in time to avoid hitting the man, the fire department reports.

The engineer immediately dialed 911, and West Pierce firefighters were dispatched to the scene, where the man - who hasn't been identified - was declared dead.

The train tracks are currently closed until the Pierce County Medical Examiner completes his investigation.
