WHAT DO YOU THINK? Lakewood Police Getting Cameras On 15 Patrol Cars

Police Chief Bret Farrar says a Department of Justice grant allowed the department to purchase the dash cameras. The cars should be ready in a month or two.

QUESTION: Are you comfortable with Lakewood Police vehicles having cameras that capture citizen interaction with officers?

Heads in the audience shook Tuesday night as the woman in the car tried to explain her way out of a ticket.

The woman, who had just ran a stop sign and had been pulled over by a Lakewood Police officer, denied it ever happened.

"I never got a traffic infraction in my life," the woman is heard yelling at the officer. "I don't have time for this, sir ... It's not fair."

A camera on a Lakewood patrol car captured the whole incident. In fact, it's the first of 15 Lakewood Police cars that will have them.

City Manager Andrew Neiditz showed the footage at Tuesday night's Lakewood City Council meeting.

Chief Bret Farrar said the cameras, which Lakewood purchased with a federal Department of Justice grant, will be installed on 15 cars that should be ready in a month or two.

Neiditz said the cameras are not only intended to serve as evidence, but the cameras could also help residents if they prove the driver - not the officer - is correct.

Lakewood is the latest police department to install cameras in their vehicles. We've all seen the footage of cops pulling over drivers (like the YouTube footage in the media gallery). Sometimes the cameras capture a struggle or incident, but most of the time, they depict drivers trying their best to talk their way out of it.
