- WHAT: Town hall on marijuana business hosted by Congressman Denny Heck
- WHEN: 6 p.m., today
- WHERE: Olympia City Hall, Council Chambers, 601 4th Avenue East, Olympia, WA 98501
Congressman Denny Heck will host a town hall-style public event titled “Preventing Violent Crime and Tax Evasion: Letting Legitimate Marijuana Businesses Use the Banking System” at Olympia City Hall.
Interested members of the public are invited to hear from the Congressman about a bipartisan bill he has co-sponsored in Congress - the Marijuana Business Access to Banking Act of 2013 - which would let legitimate marijuana businesses access the financial system, including banks and credit unions.
These businesses are currently prohibited from using the financial system, forcing them to operate on a cash-only basis. Allowing them to use the financial system would reduce the risk of violent crime and tax evasion within the legitimate marijuana industry.
A panel of experts in the field will also speak on the issue and field questions on the subject.
This is the first of Congressman Heck’s “Discuss It With Denny Heck” events, a series bipartisan conversations on some of the big issues facing America. Other events in the series can be found here.
