Exclusive: Lakewood City Councilwoman Claudia Thomas Will Not File For Reelection

Two positions on city council will be open in 2012 election as Paul Bocchi announces his candidacy for Walter Neary's seat.

It's been her desire to make a difference in the community, and after 15 years Claudia Thomas believes it's time for someone else to take her place.

Thomas confirmed she will vacate Lakewood City Council position No. 6 and not seek reelection in the 2012 election. She held several different positions on the city council and was the first black female mayor in Washington state.

"I’m feeling good about the commitment I’ve made and the support I’ve received from many people," Thomas said. "Fifteen years is long enough."

Lakewood Mayor Doug Richardson has worked beside Thomas since Lakewood incorporated in 1996. He said Thomas has been a marvelous member of the city council.

"People should be proud of her service," Richardson said. "She's as active today as she was her first day. She has just been huge when it comes to looking out for our youth."
