This year’s entertainment will be a presentation on First Ladies and their hats, featuring, well, a collection of hats.

“I’ve never seen it, but I’m really looking forward to it,” said LRW President Lucile Summerlin.

One need not be a Republican to attend the lunch – or any of the organization’s events.

“(The group) is open to anybody,” said Margie Swalley, LRW’s publicity chair. “We support the Republican Party, hold monthly meetings, and quite often hear candidates as our speakers.”

The monthly meetings are held at the golf and country club, and occasionally, they hold an evening event to which husbands are invited. Most of the members are from Lakewood, DuPont, University Place and Tacoma.

LRW was founded in 1971 and the group will celebrate its 41st birthday next month. With close to 100 members, it is the largest Republican women’s club in Washington.

With a healthy membership – and, in turn, attendance at the annual lunch – the group is able to raise money for several outreach projects, including the annual donation of gift cards to Santa’s Castle on Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the fulfillment of holiday wish lists for several young girls whose fathers are in the Veteran’s Affairs supportive housing program.

LRW also endows the annual Betty Jo Neils Scholarship, worth $1,000, to one conservative female high-school senior in the Lakewood/Tacoma area.

“We do fundraisers – some for our PAC (political action committee) account, and some for our service account – but we do more than just politics,” Summerlin said. “We like to do community outreach – and we’re a fun group of women.”
