Maj. Gen. Robert Brown Tapped to Command I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord

He was also recommended for promotion to Lieutenant General to command the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, GA. It must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate prior to taking effect.

This morning, Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta announced that the President has nominated Maj. Gen. Robert B. Brown, the second general officer to command the Maneuver Center of Excellence here, for promotion to Lieutenant General. 

Maj. Gen. Brown, who took command here Nov. 4, 2010 as the post’s 52nd Commanding General, was also tapped to command I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wa., in today’s announcement. Both Maj. Gen. Brown’s promotion and future assignment must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate prior to taking effect.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is one of 12 joint bases worldwide. It was created by merging the Army’s Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base. Today, JBLM is the home of the Army’s I Corp and the Air Force’s 62nd Airlift Wing. With the establishment of the joint base, all installation support functions are provided by the Army-led Joint Base Garrison to all the services on the base - Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. 

Maj. Gen. Brown’s change of command at Fort Benning will be in June.

During his tenure here, Maj. Gen. Brown has ensured the Maneuver Center of Excellence is the Army's leader in innovation as it supports an Army at war, while preparing for the future. 

Maj. Gen. Brown was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry upon graduation from the U.S. Military Academy in 1981. His military education includes the Infantry Basic Course, the Armor Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and the National War College. He holds a Masters Degree in National Security & Strategic Studies from the National Defense University and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Virginia. 

His command experience includes Commander, D Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado; Commander, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment (Mechanized), 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas and Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina; and Commander, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq. 

Additional assignments include Graduate Assistant, Basketball, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Adjutant in 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado; Educational Technologist/Instructor, Department of Military Instruction and Deputy Director, Center for Enhanced Performance, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; Plans Officer, United States Army Pacific, Fort Shafter, Hawaii; S3 and Executive Officer,

Maj. Gen. Brown’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster), Bronze Star Medal (with oak leaf cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), and the Army Achievement Medal. Additionally, he has earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
