Patch Poll: Sound Transit To Hold Open House On South Line Of Sounder Service

It's scheduled from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the Tacoma Dome Station.

Sound Transit is holding a series an open houses from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at its Tacoma Dome Station,Β 424 E. 25th St.

The Sounder line can get lost in discussion of train service south of Tacoma. While Amtrak is offering a through Lakewood, DuPont and the area near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, residents have generally welcomed the idea of Sounder service.

In part, that's because the region voted for it when it passed a bond for Sound Transit improvements in the mid-1990's. Over the last few years, the transit agency that services Pierce, King and Snohomish Counties has built a station on Pacific Avenue in Lakewood, as well as one in South Tacoma. Amtrak would have no stops in Lakewood or South Tacoma.

Also, Sounder trains travel about 35 miles per hour, which Amtrak trains reach about 79 miles per hour.

One of the issues that stalled construction, however, involved building and upgrading tracks through the Dome District of Tacoma. The agency and city agreed to essentially build a bridge through the area. To see the latest update on the D Street to M Street project, click here.

Sound Transit projects Sounder commuter rail service - which takes passengers north to Seattle with several stops in between - to begin in 2012.
