Bigotry All Around

The Following is a story that was recently ran on CNN:

A federal jury in New York ruled Tuesday that a man who identifies as black and Hispanic and the nonprofit he founded must pay punitive damages to an African-American employee after a previous ruling that the use of the "n-word" is inappropriate among minorities in a workplace.

The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by Brandi Johnson, who is African-American, against STRIVE, the employment center where she worked, claiming she was a victim of a hostile workplace after enduring verbal harassment and a series of statements filled with profanity and racial slurs from her supervisor. The employment center in East Harlem argued that the use of the word was part of a "tough-love culture."

The jury ruled Tuesday that center founder Rob Carmona must pay $25,000 and his organization must pay $5,000 in punitive damages.

Jurors last week awarded $250,000 in compensatory damages to Johnson, 38, who sued Carmona personally and STRIVE, which he founded in 1984.

So now after reading this story I am wondering what in the heck is going on with this country.  Since when is being called anything worth $250,000?  I in no way shape or form condone using racial slurs as I have been privy to some of them being thrown my way over the years however I do not believe that anyone should receive monetary compensation because their feelings were hurt by words.  I mean dang if this is the case I should be a multi-millionaire by now.  This again is using the race issue to harm an already fragile line between all ethnic backgrounds.  We are telling everyone that the use of words, even when bad and vulgar can cost you your livelihood, well should we not put this same standard then to the promises of politicians and those that lead us.  I find it more disrespectful and vulgar to be promised a change in our country for the better only to turn around and see that my children's children's children are now already trillions in debt.  Lets stop fighting and hurting each other with words and start holding those in charge accountable.
