Clover Park Technical's Liliya Shkarina Named To All-Washington Academic Team

When high school was moving too slowly for Liliya Shkarina, she looked for ways to increase the speed of her education and move toward her goals.

She’s thriving now as a Running Start student and accounting major working toward an associate’s degree at Clover Park Technical College. She’s active in the National Honor Society and sings in the Slavic Christian Center choir, where she also teaches Sunday school.

Her cumulative grade point average, membership in Phi Theta Kappa, and community service have led to her being named a member of the 2013 All-Washington Academic Team.

The team will be honored March 21 at a recognition ceremony held at South Puget Sound Community College.  During the ceremony the top scholars will be presented with medallions and have an opportunity to meet with Governor Jay Inslee.

Shkarina will also receive a $500 scholarship sponsored by KeyBank along with the opportunity for scholarships that every Washington state public and private four-year college extended to team members.

Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges, initiated an All-USA Academic Team to recognize two-year college students for scholastic achievement and community and college service. In 1994, state-level academic teams were introduced. Students nominated to the All-USA Academic Team are automatically named to their state team.

The All-Washington team was launched in 1996. This year all 34 community
and technical colleges in Washington state were represented on the team.
