Lakes Students Raise Money, Deliver School Supplies To Guatemala

Karis Kim, the student who spearheaded the effort, helped deliver the supplies to a remote village in the Central American country.

More than 150 pounds of donated school supplies were delivered to a remote village school in Guatemala last week as part of the Clover Park Rotary International project.

The supplies were collected in May by Lakes High School students and by Carrs Restaurant. They were delivered to the remote village of Nuevo Union Maya deep in the mountains of northern Guatemala by Karis Kim, the student at Lakes responsible for spearheading the supplies drive and two of our Clover Park School district teachers Shelley McClellan and Debbie Billingsley.

The school has around 90 students that come from the surrounding community. While the Guatemala government provides a teacher for the village there is little or no money for supplies of any sort. The supplies delivered will be a tremendous help with the education of the next generation and were greatly appreciated by all the members of the community and the schools teacher.
