Lochburn Middle School Undergoes Facelift Over Summer

Lochburn Principal Helen Wilson said the updates help improve the culture on campus. "The updates really make it easy for students to take pride in our school."

Lochburn Middle School underwent a number of changes this summer to improve safety and modernize the campus.

Lochburnwas built in 1967 with a design that included covered walkways, not ideal for a rainy climate. Before the improvements, waterwould pool in front of some classroom doors and students would have to jump over puddles to get to class.

“With the installation of gutters on all the rooflines and improved drainage along the walkways, students can safely enter their classrooms,” said Keith Weber, the district’s supervisor of maintenance.

Landscaping improvements included planting grass and adding bark. Plants from the grounds at Carter Lake and Hillside Elementary Schools were dug up before the old schools were demolished and transplanted at Lochburn. The cafeteria, or multi-purpose room, received several upgrades including a new heating system, improved lighting and wiring, painting and other updates.

Furniture, cabinets and fixtures from older schools being torn down – like the old Hudtloff Middle School – are now being used in the library and many classrooms on theLochburn campus. Future updates could include replacing each building’s roof and updating the cafeteria’s kitchen to make it more energy efficient.
