Lakes' Boys Track Team Runs Away With Title At Subdistrict Meet

Senior Izaic Yorks and junior Marquin Russell help Lancers to win.

Lakes' boys track and field team claimed the title Saturday at the 3A SPSL subdistrict track and field meet at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.

The Lancers' strong showing was bouyed by first-place finishes by senior Izaic Yorks in the 800-meter run (1 minute, 51.50 seconds) and 1,600 (4:12.83) and junior Marquin Russell in the 400 (49.96 seconds) and the 4x400 relay (3:25.64), run by junior Sammie Long, senior Alex Caba, junior KeyShawn Lee and Russell.

“Everyone’s running fast right now,” said Lancers coach Joe Clark. “The warm weather – we haven’t seen it since August, and the kids who are here are the ones who worked really hard all year.”

But despite winning the 400, Russell was disappointed about his time.

“I was trying to get in the mindset just to get ready (for districts),” the defending state champion said. “I know I have the speed, I just need the endurance. I’ll work on (it) this next week.”

On the girls side, senior Sydney Spoja took first in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, 6 inches.

While Clark said that Bellevue is the favorite to win the 3A boys state title, he believes his team can have a good showing if it performs well at this weekend's district meet.

"Everyone's going to need to do what they did this weekend," he said, "and then a little bit more."
