Lakes Throttles Capital 57-7

Lancers remain undefeated with a blowout victory against the Cougars. Six players on Lakes' offense scored touchdowns and the defense allowed just 133 total yards.

Bigger. Faster. Stronger.

The Lancers dominated with those three athletic abilities on the football field against Capital, winning 57-7 in a non-league victory at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood on Friday night.

Capital surprised Lakes last year, handing the Lancers their only regular-season loss in a double overtime victory in Olympia. Lakes did not wait long to exact the revenge it had been waiting a year for, putting up 28 points in the games first 8:12 of game time.

"This was a personal game to us," Lakes linebacker Dominic Milton said. "And tonight our defense and offense came out with a whole bunch of fire."

The offense looked unstoppable in the games opening half, piling up 385 yards, while the Lancers defense held Capital to just 51 yards of total offense in the first two quarters.

Capital (0-3 overall) punted or turned the ball over on every possession up until the last drive of the game. Lakes, the Class 3A No. 2 ranked team was in prime form right out of the gate.

Lakes linebacker Kevin Thompson registered six tackles including a sack. Although he didn't play in last year's upset loss, he said he could feel the intensity pouring over from it.

"We had to make them respect us," Thompson said. "We had to do what we had to do and prove it to them."

Lakes senior quarterback David Wood completed 11 of 23 passes for 185 yards and three TDs and two interceptions. Wood also rushed for 100 yards, including a 67-yard score where he high-hurdled a defender with less than a minute remaining in the half.

Charles Hall Jr. — who recovered two fumbles and returned one for a TD — converted the 2-point conversion, giving the Lancers a 50-0 lead before halftime.

Head coach Dave Miller said his kids came out with fire in their nose.

"Defensively, we played physical and offensively we ran the ball, threw the ball and did what we wanted to do," Miller said. "We showed a glimpse of how we want to be.

Capital running back Kai Vansickle eclipsed the century mark rushing against Olympia in a tough 10-7 loss in the Spaghetti Bowl last week. Against Lakes, he was held to just 32 yards on 15 carries. Sophomore quarterback Derrick Becker completed just three passes for 20 yards.

Meanwhile, Lakes spread the ball around. Six offensive players scored touchdowns. Senior Cedric Dozier played a limited role as quarterback but still managed to score on a 32-yard run. He finished with 79 yards from scrimmage.

Wood missed on a few passes throughout the game and was pressured often — partially due to Capital's blitz-heavy defense, Miller said. But the 6-foot 4-inch 225 pound QB moved the juggernaut offense down the field with great field position created by the defense.

He connected with Lakes junior wide receiver Sammie Long for an 12 yard touchdown with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, the team's only score of the second half.

There was no holding back in the first half from Miller's perspective.

"Anything goes the first half," he said. "We're going to play big-boy football. The goal is to score half a hundred by halftime. That led into that statement we we're trying to make."
