JBLM Soldiers To Give Back Through Habitat For Humanity

Soldiers from the Warrior Transition Battalion, a unit providing care for soldiers transitioning back to civilian life, are volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Aug. 6-8.

After returning from deployment with injuries or illnesses, some soldiers find difficulty reconnecting with civilian society.

Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity is hoping to make the transition easier. Soldiers from the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Warrior Transition Battalion is volunteering in the Lakewood's Tillicum neighborhood, Aug. 6-8. to build homes for low-income Pierce County families

"Building homes for people in our local area helps our soldiers reintegrate and reconnect with our community neighbors, it reminds them that they can still give back to others despite their injuries or illnesses, and it gives us a great opportunity to say thank you to the local communities that continue to provide us with such incredible support," said Lt. Col. Jeffrey Mosso, Warrior Transition Battalion commander.

The Tacoma/Pierce Habitat affiliate is one of the few in the country that engages with veterans in their work. The nonprofit makes veteran housing a priority, among the families demonstrating need for decent, affordable housing.

"Many of these young veterans have families and children, and it is too easy to envision a struggle to find decent, affordable housing in our community," Tacoma/Pierce HFH CEO Maureen Fife said.

The Warrior Transition Battalion will be working at in Tillicum, Tuesday through Thursday, beginning at 8:45 a.m., with a 15-minute break at 10:30 a.m. and lunch break at 12:30 p.m.

The site address is: 14812 Portland Avenue SW, Lakewood, WA 98498. For more information please contact the Habitat office at office@tpc-habitat.org or call 253-627-5626.
