Advice for the Class of 2013

The Von Trapp children sang it so beautifully: ♪ "So long... farewell... auf wiedersehen... goodbye."♫

I keep humming that little tune to myself today. I suppose it's because graduation season is finally upon us in the Pacific Northwest.

The Upper School students attending Charles Wright Academy, a private independent school located in Tacoma, Wash., as well as many other students across the Puget Sound region, are getting ready to walk across the stage and accept their high school diplomas.

There is so much to celebrate this year. It's certainly been another outstanding year for Charles Wright Academy's senior class. In fact, the annual Report to Parents confirmed the Class of 2013 is 100 percent college bound to more than 45 colleges in 21 states and was offered more than $2.3 million in merit scholarship aid.

So, as the commencement ceremonies begin and we gather to mark this milestone in their lives, many of us will shed tears of joy, cheer, embrace one another, and reflect upon their accomplishments and all the promise that lies ahead. We may even find ourselves reflecting on our own graduation day.

All this got me thinking: What's the best advice you received when you graduated? Or, what was the best advice you ever gave to a graduate?

Some of my favorites pieces of advice include:

  • Why fail when success is an option?
  • Always—ALWAYS—wear sunscreen.
