The Polynesian Grill is a small mall restaurant with a warm family feeling and wonderful Filipino food. Owner Chico Magel and his wife, Annie, have run the restaurant for six years, making it a favorite gathering place for the Filipino and Pacific Island communities.

Magel is Samoan and Annie is Filipina, so their menu is a mixture of both cultures. Filipino food, explains Chico, is essentially traditional Spanish cuisine overlaid with Asian flavors. Try the adobo, which he calls “the Phillipine national dish” — chicken or pork slow-cooked in onion, garlic, vinegar and soy sauce. Or go potluck with a combination of tapsilog, longsilog, fried tilapia and halo halo.

The restaurant has a small grocery section with stock that will please Filipinos who miss familiar brands from the islands. The restaurant is also popular with soldiers and airmen from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, who acquired a taste for the food while serving overseas.
